Harmanpreet Singh heroics helps India beat Pakistan in Asian Champions Trophy

New Delhi: India men’s hockey team prevailed over arch-rivals Pakistan in their last league fixture of the Asian Champions Trophy event in China. India, who maintained their unbeaten run in the ongoing event, beat the Asian rivals 2-1 in a close contest on Saturday. Pakistan took a surprise lead in the 7th minute with Ahmad Nadeem scoring the opener.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored the equaliser quickly in the 13th minute through a penalty corner to make the score 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. The skipper again came charging in the 19th minute to score another brace, also through a PC, taking a 2-1 lead. For the remaining time of the contest, India produced a solid defence to keep away the Asian rivals from scoring any goal.

Before this match, both India and Pakistan had qualified for the last four round. The top four sides from the round robin format qualifies for the semifinal scheduled for September 16, with the final slated for September 17. Earlier, defending Champions India, who are in a fabulous form in this ongoing event, beat Korea 3-1, China 3-0, Japan 5-0 and Malaysia 8-1 in their previous encounters in the event.
