New Delhi: Harry Kane broke England legend Wayne Rooney’s record for most goals by an English player in Champions League history with 4 goals for Bayern Munich in their 9-2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. Bayern became the first team in Champions League history to score nine goals in a single game as they kicked off their campaign in style.
Kane opened the scoring for Bayern by converting a penalty in the 19th minute before Raphael Guerreiro doubled the German giant’s lead with a goal in the 33rd minute. Michael Ollise scored in the 38th minute to ensure Bayern headed into the break with a convincing 3-0 lead. Zagreb did fight back in the second half with two quick goals in five minutes, however, Kane put the game to bed with a hat-trick.
Zagreb scored twice at the start of the second half to reduce the lead to 3-2 with hopes of a revival. However, their aspirations of a comeback were left shattered when Kane scored in the 57th minute to make it a 2-goal cushion for Bayern. There was no stopping the German giants after Kane’s 2nd goal of the night as they ran riot to record a thumping 9-2 win.
While Kane converted two more penalties to complete his hat-trick and finish with a total of 4 goals, Olise bagged a brace. Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka were also on the scoresheet for Bayern on the historic night.

Kane enjoyed a record-breaking night after scoring four goals in Bayern’s historic win. He went past Rooney to become the top English scorer in Champions League/European Cup history with 33 goals from 45 matches. Rooney scored 30 goals in the Champions League during his illustrious career and was England’s top-scorer in the elite competition until Wednesday.
