Have Newcastle United emerged as new candidates in the title race?

New Delhi: Newcastle United fans are living the dream currently. A nine-match winning streak across all competitions, Alexander Isak’s red-hot form and a return to the Premier League’s top four after months of mid-table struggles have given the Magpies new energy. Their recent 3-0 victory over the Wolves showcased their growing dominance with Isak once again stealing the show by scoring twice and assisting Anthony Gordon’s goal.

The Magpies are three points clear of the defending champions Manchester City and are just nine point behind the table toppers Liverpool. Newcastle’s recent resurgence under Eddie Howe has sparked discussions about them joining the title race. While they still need Liverpool to falter massively and even their current form and history of dramatic turnarounds in the league suggest that a title challenge might not be completely out of reach but do they have what it takes to maintain this momentum needs to be seen.

Eddie Howe’s influence

Eddie Howe’s transformation of Newcastle has been nothing short of a remarkable turnaround. From battling mid-season inconsistency and questions over their form, the Magpies have emerged as one of the most feared teams in the Premier League. Their recent run has seen them brush aside teams like Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal with ease, showcasing their ability to perform on the biggest stages.

At the heart of this revival has been none other than Alexander Isak whose eight-game Premier League scoring streak has made him only the fourth player to find the net in eight straight Premier League fixtures after legends like Ruud van NistelrooyDaniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy. The Swedish striker has not only been prolific but also unselfish as seen in his assist for Gordon’s goal against Wolves. The 25-year-old’s composure in front of goal and ability to link play have made him one of the most complete forwards in Europe. With 17 goals in just 23 appearances this season, Isak’s contribution cannot be overstated.

Can the Magpies sustain the momentum?

The biggest question is whether Newcastle can sustain their rediscovered form. Over the years, teams have overturned significant point gaps to win the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester United pulling off such feats in the past. The Gunners overcame the biggest points gap to win the Premier League title in 1997-98, having been 13 points behind with a game in hand. However, it would take a monumental slip-up from Liverpool for Newcastle to catch up. Despite this, the Magpies have shown they have the tools to capitalize on any opportunity with their defensive solidity and offensive firepower making them a genuine threat.

Howe’s side still has areas to improve as he admitted after the win against Wolves. Their tendency to give opponents chances as seen in Wednesday’s game at times, is a concern. However, their ability to be clinical in attack has often masked defensive lapses. If they can fine-tune their game further, Newcastle might not just be a team fighting for a top-four spot but one pushing for silverware.

‘Isak’s signing to cost the bank and more’

Alexander Isak’s form has not gone unnoticed, with top European clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the Swedish international. Former Tottenham and England winger Aaron Lennon has also told BBC that he is going to cost you the bank and more. Isak possesses the ability to create, finish, and defend when needed. He has earned comparisons to the best forwards in the game and is currently being linked with a move to Arsenal in the winter transfer window.

However, Newcastle will be determined to keep hold of their star man with manager Eddie Howe also acknowledging his invaluable contribution to the team’s success. While the odds may not favour them yet the Magpies’ recent run has certainly put them in the discussion spot for clubs. Whether or not they lift the title this season, the Magpies’ rise under Howe and the brilliance of players like Isak have cemented their place as serious contenders for years to come.

After Newcastle United stun Wolves with a dominant 3-0 victory in the Premier League, the Magpies have now climbed the fourth place in the standings igniting the title race further.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
