‘He should have continued for longer’: Former India coach on Virat Kohli’s Test captaincy

New Delhi: India’s star batter Virat Kohli stunned fans after he stepped down from Test captaincy in January 2022. He took Team India to a different level in the longer format, winning the Test series in Australia and the famous Lord’s Test win against England in 2021.

Kohli took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni in December 2014. He registered his first Test series win against Sri Lanka in 2015. He has been the most successful Test captain for India. He led the Indian team in 68 Test matches and won 40 out of them and has a winning percentage of 58.82.

He was the first Indian captain to clinch the Test series in Australia, which they won in the 2018. Under his leadership, the team also reached  in the final of the World Test Championship 2021. He recently played a crucial role for Team India in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 and announced his retirement from the shortest format after winning the title in Barbados on June 29, 2024. He is currently on a break but is expected to be back for the Two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

‘Virat was driven with the fact that India had to improve overseas’: Sanjay Bangar

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar on The Rao Podcast said that he personally feels that Virat should have continued for longer as a Test captain.

“I personally feel that he should have continued for longer as a Test captain because he probably captained India in 65 Test matches, and one of the things I feel is that he could have probably continued as a Test captain for a longer period” Bangar said on The Rao Podcast.

He also said that Virat wanted to improve India’s performance overseas. Bangar also added that he scored the most runs during his captaincy period and he had that drive.

“Virat was driven with the fact that India had to improve their performances overseas. Because in India we knew that whether anybody is there or not, with all due respect to the opposition, if you come to India, India is winning 75 per cent of the time. You’ll really have to play poorly to lose in India” Bangar said.

He himself achieved enormous levels of fitness and challenged his physical limits to the hilt. He worked the hardest. I think he scored the maximum runs during that period as a captain and he had that drive” he added.
