Heatwave linked diarrhoea cases on rise; expert says dehydration irritates gut lining leading to dysentery

New Delhi: The northern regions of India get no relief from the fierce heatwave, with temperatures sticking to over 45 degrees for the past ten days. While the condition is likely to be the same for the next coming days most probably till May 30. Amid the worsening weather conditions hospitals in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and other places have been noticing a surge in patients getting admitted due to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke and diarrhoea cases.

Dr Anantha Padmanabha, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru told News9, “Heatstroke’s rise in causing diarrhoea is likely due to a combined effect of high external temperatures. When the body overheats, dehydration disrupts the digestive system’s delicate balance of fluids and electrolytes. This imbalance irritates the gut lining, leading to diarrhoea. Additionally, heatstroke creates a stressful response, potentially affecting gut motility and promoting loose stools.”

According to recent studies, there has been a notable rise in gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhoea, during periods of extreme heat. Causes for this include water contamination, dehydration, and bacterial growths called scherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella which are the common culprits of diarrhoea. On the other hand, there are times during the summer season when the food is not stored properly and they get bacterial growth in them. Hence, here are some tips on how to keep your gut healthy and cool amid a heatwave.

Ways to keep gut health and cool amid heatwave

Suggesting some tips and ways to prevent diarrhoea in this hot weather, Dr Padmanabha said, “To protect your gut health during hot weather, prioritise staying hydrated with boiled and cooled water or electrolyte drinks. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which dehydrate. Crucially, during hot weather, be cautious of consuming outside liquids, as they might harbour bacteria, viruses, or parasites that can also cause diarrhoea. Be aware of any local cholera outbreaks and take recommended precautions. Maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and yoghurt, which provides essential gut bacteria and hydration.”

“If diarrhoea occurs, focus on rehydration and bland foods like bananas or rice to minimise further irritation. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor, especially if you experience signs of heatstroke like confusion, dizziness, or high body temperature.”
