At least nine people lost their lives in Nepal’s mountainous districts on Saturday as heavy rainfall triggered deadly landslides. The disaster struck while many were asleep, burying houses in three separate areas about 250 kilometers (156 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu, according to the National Disaster Rescue and Reduction Management Authority.
In Malika village, Gulmi district, a landslide swallowed a house, killing five members of the same family. The victims included a couple, their daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, one of whom was an 8-month-old girl. In addition to the tragedy in Gulmi, two people were killed in the neighboring Baglung district, and another two in Syangja district, officials reported.
Risk of landslides is higher during monsoon
The monsoon season, which brings heavy rainfall to Nepal, began earlier this month. The season often triggers landslides in the mountainous areas that cover much of the Himalayan nation, causing significant damage and loss of life from June to September.
Nepalese authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide aid to affected areas.
