Kasaragod: Strong winds and heavy down pour has wrecked havoc in many parts of North Malabar districts of Kerala adding to woes among a large section of people directly involved with agriculture and allied activities in many parts of Kasaragod, Kannur and Kozhikode districts.
More than hundreds of houses in Kasaragod district has been destroyed and nearly 200 small houses and shops were partially damaged in the torrential rains and winds that swept across the northern tip of the state.
“There has been widespread destruction in the district following the torrential winds and rains reported yesterday night and evening. Electric lines were uprooted after trees had fell upon them. We are trying to remove the trees and portions of landfills that has blocked the roads in many parts of the district that has led to traffic being halted in the region. We are expecting that by today afternoon we will be able to complete the job and ensure that traffic is normal in the state and national highways”, said revenue official K Aravind Kumar to News9.
He also added that the biggest challenge currently is the heavy rains that is still continuing in many parts of the district.
Heavy rains predicted for the week
Meanwhile the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rains and strong winds in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Wayanad in the next four days.
Heavy rainfall ( 7cm to 11cm ) is expected from 26th to 29th July in many parts of Kerala with surface winds up to 30 kmph expected today and tomorrow in the state. IMD also predicts that surface winds gusting up to 50 kmph expected in many parts of the state in the next 4 days.
Fisherman has been advised not to venture into the sea taking into account the high tides and strong currents prevailing in the arabian sea
