New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed former India opener Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the team. Rahul Dravid stepped down from India’s head coach position after winning the T20 World Cup with the Men in Blue.
Gambhir will start his stint with the Indian team on India’s tour of Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue will face Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI and T20I series. Gambhir was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders for the last few years. Under his leadership, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also lifted the IPL 2024 trophy.
RCB head coach Andy Flower, who worked with Gambhir previously at LSG said that he enjoyed working with Gambhir and he got strong opinions.
“Well, the first thing he’s got to do is just give up his legends cricket at the moment. He’s quite a man Gautam Gambhir, I really enjoyed working with him. He’s got strong opinions, he’s got strong clear views on the game” Flower said on Sony Sports.
He also said that Gambhir is a proud Indian and loves Indian cricket. Flower also believes that Gambhir will do a great job as the head coach.
“He’s very decisive, he’s a very proud Indian, he loves Indian cricket and his position, representing Indian cricket. I think it’s a good appointment and I think he’s going to be successful” he added.
Tough challenges ahead for New head coach
Gautam Gambhir will start his coaching tenure from the white ball series against Sri Lanka on July 28. After that, Team India will face Bangladesh and New Zealand in the home Test series. The Men in Blue will take on Australia in the five-match Test series from November 22. Rohit Sharma and Co. will also take part in Champions Trophy and World Test Championship final (if qualified) in 2025.
