‘He’s Breaking English Language’: Opposition Mocks Justin Trudeau’s Parliament Speech

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was ridiculed in the country’s Parliament on Wednesday as he tried to defend the Liberal Party’s immigration record amid strong criticism from the Opposition.

During a debate, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticised Trudeau over the government’s immigration policies during the housing crisis. With the Liberals trailing in polls ahead of the elections, Poilievre said, “He (Canadian PM Trudeau) has destroyed the immigration, the housing market, the cost of living. Will he call a carbon tax election so that we can bring home Canada’s promise? He cannot fix what he broke on immigration, housing, or anything else because he is busy fighting his own caucus. Why won’t he call a carbon tax election so that we can restore Canada’s promise where anyone who comes here and works hard can have a good life, a safe street, and a warm home?”

Following this, Trudeau responded saying, “Once again, Mr. Speaker, we see the Leader of the Opposition pushing a brokenist vision of Canada that is simply not aligned with the reality.” Poilievre quickly retorted with a smirk, “Mr. Speaker, ‘brokenist’, it’s not even a word. He (Canadian PM Trudeau) is even breaking the English language.”

Poilievre added, “He’s even breaking the English language. Oh my goodness. So he broke the housing market by doubling the costs. He broke the cost of food by jacking up the carbon tax and increasing prices 36% faster than in the United States. He’s broken our immigration system. He’s breaking the bank with his doubling of the debt. Even his own caucus members think that everything is broken.  Why don’t we have a carbon tax election to decide?”

Trudeau’s use of the term ‘brokenist’ sparked a meme frenzy online, with many mocking him on social media. One user wrote, “Wait! One more absurd addition to the glossary, compliments of Canada’s lame-duck Prime Minister: brokenist. Where did you hear that? What does it even mean!? What is happening to the English language?”

Another user added a humorous comment: “This will put a smile on your face. From the most ‘brokenist’ PM Canada has ever had.”

This comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding foreign interference in Canadian politics. Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to disclose the names of Conservative MPs he accused of being involved. Poilievre also alleged that Trudeau knowingly permitted China to interfere in Canadian elections to secure his own victory in two consecutive general elections.

In a pointed statement, Poilievre accused Trudeau of “lying to distract from a Liberal caucus revolt against his leadership.” This controversy comes amid a diplomatic dispute between India and Canada, resulting in the expulsion of diplomats from both nations. As Trudeau faces mounting criticism at home, many legislators express dissatisfaction with his leadership and urge him not to seek a fourth term.

During a testimony before the country’s Foreign Interference Commission, Trudeau claimed he had “names of a number of parliamentarians, former parliamentarians and or candidates in the Conservative Party who are engaged, or are at high risk of, or for whom there is clear intelligence around foreign interference.” However, he later acknowledged that the intelligence regarding Conservative activities might be “shoddy or incomplete or just allegations from a single source.”

Poilievre responded strongly, asserting that if Trudeau possessed evidence, he should make it public. “Now that he had blurted it out, at a commission of inquiry, he should release the facts. But he won’t, because he is making it up,” Poilievre stated. He added that Trudeau and his government had been repeatedly warned about foreign interference, including from within their own Liberal Party, but failed to take action. To further his demands, the Conservative leader initiated a petition urging Trudeau to release the names of the accused MPs.
