New Delhi: A lot was expected from India’s young guns on the Australia tour, but so far the performances have been below par and unexpectedly flat. In terms of talent and ability, the trio of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant is right up there with the best but their Border-Gavaskar Trophy displays tell a different story altogether.
All three batters have flattered to deceive so far in the series. While Yashasvi Jaiswal started the tour with a bang by scoring a smashing second-inning hundred in Perth, the opener has struggled for consistency.
Shubman Gill has looked good in almost the innings he has batted and even managed to get starts, but has been unable to convert them. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, has failed to replicate his past performances on the Australia tour, managing just 96 runs in five innings at a dismal average of 19.20.
Jaiswal, Gill must step up in the last two Tests
Youngsters have played a key role in India’s success in the last two BGT editions in Australia and there’s still time for them to step up and prove their mettle. With the series locked in at 1-1, there’s still a lot of time left for the young guns to make an impact.
According to India captain Rohit Sharma, all three batters are on the same boat and the team management fully believes in their abilities to bounce back and shine in the remaining two Tests.
“See, as I told you, all these youngsters – Rishabh, Gill, Jaiswal, all these youngsters are in the same boat. We don’t want to complicate what they are doing. They know what they are expected to do,” said Rohit in the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
Melbourne and Sydney will be the least challenging of all five venues for the Indians. It was at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground that India bounced back brilliantly from the infamous Adelaide 36 all-out performance three years ago. The youngsters were at the heart of the famous eight-wicket win in Melbourne, that sowed the seeds of a magnificent series victory.
With already a win in their kitty, India are in a much better place than they were three years ago ahead of the Melbourne Test.
The only thing left for them to do is to get inspired.
India’s young batting stars, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant, have flattered to deceive in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Despite possessing immense talent, their performances have been inconsistent in the first three Tests.
