Hindus Protests at UN Headquarters, Demand Protection for Minorities in Bangladesh

New York: The United Nations Headquarters saw a huge protest on Saturday against the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, demanding protection for Hindu minority residents in the country. 

The protest, organized by the NGO HinduAction, took place outside the UN HQ. The NGO shared a video on on their X account (formerly known as Twitter) prasing those who joined the protest. 

The post reads, “Protests outside the @UN ongoing—calling for saving the Hindus and minorities in #Bangladesh. Very impressive to see people from all walks of life show up spontaneously on a workday.”

In the video, several people, both male and female, are seen gathering outside the UN headquarters, holding banners and posters with the message ‘Stop Hindu Genocide’.

The protest also occurred at other locations in New York, according to the NGO.

Hindus Unsafe in Bangladesh

Following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina from the prime minister’s position and the rise of an interim government, there has been significant violence in Bangladesh targeting minorities. Reports and videos from Bangladesh show attacks on Hindu communities and targeting of minorities, which have already sparked outrage in other countries, condemning the violence.

US Congressmen Condemn Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh

Several Congress members have spoken out to urge protection for Hindus in the region. Republican Congressman Pat Fallon condemned the ongoing political violence and religious persecution, urging the interim government to act in the interest of the Bangladeshi people and end the violence. “The targeting of Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and any other religious minority is reprehensible. Those who have instigated and participated in these acts of violence must be held responsible,” Fallon added.

Congressman Shri Thanedar also condemned the violence against minority groups in Bangladesh. “We need justice for the minority Hindus. These are heartbreaking activities. This has to stop, and I’m on top of it,” Thanedar said in a video statement issued Friday. “The attacks on the minority Hindus are totally unacceptable. I am in touch with the State Department and authorities across the world. I am on top of it. And we will not stop until all of these issues are addressed,” he added.
