New Delhi: There have been a lot of speculations surrounding former captain Rohit Sharma’s future with his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) amid reports that the veteran batter is keen to leave. Rohit was removed from captaincy and replaced by Hardik Pandya by the Mumbai Indians management last year.
The move didn’t go down well with Rohit and the relationship between him the franchise has reportedly deteriorated ever since. Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh had also slammed MI head coach Mark Boucher over his comments on the change in captaincy at the franchise earlier this year, making it clear that all was not well between Rohit and his team.
Recently, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was asked about Rohit’s future with Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2025 auction which is scheduled to take place later this year. Chopra said he believes the five-time champions won’t retain Rohit and that his journey with the franchise is over. Rohit has been leading MI since 2013 and is one of the most successful captains in IPL history with 5 titles.
“Will he stay or will he go? It’s a big question. Personally, I feel he will not stay. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings’ story is very different but Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him,” Chopra said while responding to a fan’s question in a video on his YouTube channel.
Further speaking about Rohit’s future, Chopra said the Indian ODI and Test skipper can move to some other team in a trade deal and if that doesn’t happen, he might enter the mega auction. However, Chopra needs to be corrected here as Rohit being traded is not possible ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The trading window doesn’t open ahead of a mega auction.
“Anything can happen but I don’t think Rohit is going to be retained here. I don’t have any information but I feel Rohit will probably be released. He might go to someone in the trade window, that’s a possibility that he doesn’t go to the auction, but if that doesn’t happen, he might be seen in the auction. I feel his journey with the Mumbai Indians is over,” added Chopra, a former KKR batter.
Can Rohit Sharma be traded ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction?
No, Rohit cannot be traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction as there will be no trading window before the event. The only way Rohit can be traded is if he is retained or bought back by Mumbai Indians at the auction and traded ahead of the mini-auction in IPL 2025. However, that seems unlikely as MI won’t retain him to buy him back just to keep him for a season.
It remains to be seen what plans do MI have for their former captain and if they will take the punt by retaining him for a long-term which would mean another three years at least.
A former India batter has made a huge claim on Rohit Sharma’s future with Mumbai Indians (MI), suggesting that he might not be retained by Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.
