Holika Dahan 2025 falls on this date—Check shubh muhurat and Bhadra Kaal

Mumbai: Holika Dahan, a significant Hindu festival, is observed annually on the full moon day of the Phalguna month. According to Hindu mythology, the ritual symbolises the victory of good over evil. Legend has it that the demon king Hiranyakashipu, in an attempt to kill his own son Prahlad—an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu—ordered his sister Holika to sit in a fire with the child. Holika had a boon that made her immune to fire, but by divine intervention, she perished in the flames while Prahlad remained unharmed. Since then, Holika Dahan has been performed every year to commemorate this event.

The festival marks the end of Holashtak, an inauspicious eight-day period. The following day, people across India celebrate Holi, the festival of colours, with joy and enthusiasm. However, this year’s Holika Dahan falls under the shadow of Bhadra Kaal, a time considered inauspicious for the ritual. Understanding the significance of Bhadra and its impact on the event is essential for devotees.

When is Holika Dahan in 2025?

As per the Hindu calendar, the full moon (Purnima) of the Phalguna month will begin on 13 March at 10:35 AM and conclude on 14 March at 12:23 PM. Hence, Holika Dahan will take place on 13 March 2025. The following day, Holi will be celebrated across the country.

Bhadra Kaal and Holika Dahan

This year, Bhadra Kaal will be present during Holika Dahan on 13 March. The Bhadra Poonch period will begin at 6:57 PM and last until 8:14 PM, followed by the Bhadra Mukh phase, which will continue until 10:22 PM. Performing Holika Dahan during Bhadra Mukh is considered inauspicious. Therefore, the auspicious time (Shubh Muhurat) for Holika Dahan will commence at 11:26 PM and last until 12:30 AM, providing a one-hour-four-minute window for the ritual.

Who is Bhadra?

In Hindu scriptures, Bhadra is described as the daughter of the Sun God (Surya Dev) and the sister of Shani Dev (Saturn). She is believed to have an aggressive and wrathful nature. Due to this, no auspicious ceremonies or rituals are performed during Bhadra Kaal, as it is said that events conducted during this period do not yield positive results. Astrologers and priests advise avoiding any significant or auspicious work during this time.

As Holika Dahan approaches, devotees are encouraged to observe the recommended timings and rituals to ensure a prosperous and meaningful celebration.
