Hope Syed Modi win sparks my comeback, says PV Sindhu after ending title drought

New Delhi: After winning the Syed Modi International women’s singles crown, PV Sindhu hopes her first title in two and half years provides second wind to her career.

She beat China’s Wu Luo Yu 21-14, 21-16 in the final for her third Syed Modi women’s singles title after 2017 and 2022 and first triumph since the Singapore Open in July 2022.

Sindhu was relieved to have finally won after getting beaten in the final of Malaysia Masters Super 500 final and exiting the Paris Olympics at the pre-quarterfinal stage.

She hopes the title win marks the start of a futiful last phase of her career in which she has won a bronze and silver at successive Olympics (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020).

‘LA 2028 too far’

Now Sindhu isn’t willing to look too far ahead, focussing instead on remaining injury free and enjoying the ride for as long she can.

“My main goal is to stay injury-free, which is very, very important. Los Angeles (Olympics) is still too far away. I will definitely play, but the main thing is staying injury-free and enjoying the sport. If I stay fit, then why not?”

“I’m very happy that I’m finishing off with a win. Now it’s time to just go back, relax, and start again from January. I hope this is a comeback, and I’m looking forward to many more victories,” she said on Sunday.

At 29, Sindhu has enough experience to understand the need to pick and choose when and where to play from now on to manage her workload and extend her career for as long as she can.

“This (win) will definitely give me a lot of confidence. Being 29 is an advantage in many ways because I have a lot of experience. Being smart and experienced is key, and I’m definitely going to play for the next couple of years,” Sindhu told reporters.

“I’ll be playing the upcoming tournaments in Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. Obviously, we’ll have to pick and choose tournaments because I’ll have to be smart enough to decide what to play and what not. I need to be much smarter in terms of that.”
