New Delhi: As rain continues to play spoilsport in the second Test between India and Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, there is a strong possibility that the match might get called off if the poor weather continues. The Day 2 of the Test match was abandoned on Saturday, September 28 without a ball being bowled due to rain and wet outfield.
The opening day of the Test match was also marred with continuous rain delays as only 35 overs of action was possible during Bangladesh’s first innings. With the possibility of a complete washout looming large, it is bad news for Team India, who will be denied an opportunity to complete a 2-0 whitewash in the two-match Test series.
What happens if the 2nd Test between India and Bangladesh is washed out?
The Test match getting washed out completely due to rain cannot be ruled out with rain hampering the proceedings on the first couple of days. If the match ends up getting called off completely, it will be declared as a draw with both teams sharing points in the World Test Championship (WTC). It will also mean India will have to settle for a 1-0 series win instead of a 2-0 whitewash.
How will a washout in 2nd Test impact India’s WTC final chances?
India are currently in a strong position to qualify for their third straight World Test Championship (WTC) final as they are in the top spot on the WTC points table with 7 wins and 1 draw from 10 matches and a win percentage of 71.67. A washout would mean shared points but India will still manage to retain the top spot on the WTC points table.
However, the Indian team will need to win at least 4 of their next 8 matches to ensure they finish with a PCT of 60 or more to all but secure a spot in the final of the World Test Championship 2023-25. India will host New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home after the ongoing series against Bangladesh before heading to Australia for a 5-match Test series Down Under later this year.
