New Delhi: The Indian contingent pulled the curtains down on their campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday, signing off with six medals across different sports in the French capital. India were one shy of equalling their best-ever Olympics performance as the Tokyo Games 2020 saw the Indian contingent winning seven medals including a gold. However, gold was put off the cards as India won five bronze and a sole silver medal.
The campaign was a tough watch for the Indian fans as they saw many medals slipping out of hands, making the Paris outing a mix of both achievements and disappointments. The athletes did perform at their best, showing determination and resilience but the overall medal tally didn’t live up to the expectations of some who expected them to breach the seven-medal mark.
As many athletes made it to the final rounds or into the playoff games, it was expected that the tally might cross 10 medals, but with many of them finishing fourth, it didn’t turn out to be the case. However, there’s still a chance that India might equal their medal tally of the Tokyo Games i.e. bringing home seven medals from Paris. Before getting to the how part, here’s a look at India’s medal winners at the Paris Games.

How can India finish with seven medals?
The highly controversial case of ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is the final hope for Indians to equal their best-ever Olympic tally. It is understood that Vinesh was disqualified from her final bout of the women’s freestyle 50kg event on the match day as she was deemed 100 grams overweight, which forced the organisers to prevent her progress into the game.
In response, Vinesh had filed an appeal against her disqualification at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), the highest court to judge on sporting disputes. While her first plea of getting to fight in the final was rejected by the court, her second plea of demanding a “joint-silver medal” was accepted. The hearing was conducted on Friday with Vinesh being represented by high-profile Indian lawyers Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.
The ad-hoc division of the CAS in Paris was due to deliver the verdict on Saturday at 6:00 pm local time but deferred it further to a day. As per the latest development, the verdict will be out on Sunday, August 11 same time. If the verdict comes out in Vinesh’s favour, India will get another silver medal added to the tally and can thus finish with seven medals at the Paris Games.
