How much burping is normal? Doctors say when it becomes a cause of concern

New Delhi: Burping is often considered rude but surely cannot be considered unhealthy as it indicates that food has been or is being digested. In some cases, the burp can be too loud too smelly, or even painful and uncomfortable, but according to a 2020 study published in Springer, burping up to 30 times in a day is normal. Although it can seem like a lot for once, but it is nothing to worry about. Burping up to four times a day is considered normal. And when one factors in three meals in a day along with a snack or two, 30 does not look like a high number. But if you still feel that you are burping too much, there could be some health problems to blame for it.

What is burping?

Burping is the body’s way of expelling excessive gas from the stomach. When one swallows food and drinks, it passes through the oesophagus into the stomach. In the stomach, there are digestive enzymes that break food into sugar and nutrients that are then used in the form of energy. Gas is produced in the process; additionally, air is swallowed in the eating and drinking process. Burping helps get rid of this excess gas which can otherwise cause bloating and severe stomach pain.

Read on to know the most problematic cases when one ends up burping too much:

Stomach ulcers: Stomach ulcers or gastric ulcers refer to sores that form on the stomach lining. The main symptom of this condition is a gnawing pan in the stomach centre or a burning sensation. However, these are not usually very painful but are accompanied by a feeling of sickness, heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux.
Indigestion: Indigestion can also be associated with burping too much. This can also lead to bloating, heartburn, burping, farting or bringing food up or bitter-tasting fluid. Doctors say that this can be curbed by limiting coffee, tea, alcohol, and fizzy drinks. These should particularly be avoided three to four hours before bed, along with spicy and fatty foods.
Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining, also known as gastritis, can be blamed for burping too much. It can trigger a severe sense of fullness after small meals and even bloating and acid reflux.
Irritable bowel syndrome: Irritable bowel syndrome is another condition characterised by digestive discomfort. Its symptoms are burping, stomach pain, cramps, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea.
Acid reflux: Another case wherein one is likely to deal with bitter, smelly, loud, and recurring burps is acid reflux. This condition can be accompanied by burning sensations and pain in the belly.
