Why milk inflation is crucial?
India is the world’s largest consumer of milk and dairy products. A small increase in price can hurt Indian household’s budget. Milk holds the second-largest weight in India’s food inflation basket. It means that increase in milk price will have a larger impact on CPI Inflation as well.
What lies ahead?
India is also the world’s largest producer of milk. It is a biological phenomenon that cows produce less milk in summer. With heatwave continuing, dairy companies are already reporting a decrease in supply, however, the demand has not decreased. If this imbalance of demand and supply continues, prices of milk are likely to increase in the future.
