How only one international appearance is set to make young speedster Mayank Yadav a ‘Million Dollar’ man?

New Delhi: India’s young pace sensation Mayank Yadav is set to become the latest player to join the IPL ‘Million Dollar Club’ after making just one international appearance. Yadav made his India debut in the opening T20I of the three-match series in Gwalior on October 6, Sunday.

The right-arm pacer began his international innings on a positive note by bowling a maiden in his first-ever international appearance and picking up his maiden wicket in the next over.

It was an impressive performance by the express pacer who clocked 149.9 kph in his first-ever international appearance.

While Mayank couldn’t touch the 150-kph mark in his four-over spell, he hit the 140 mark consistently in 17 out of the 24 balls he bowled.

Mayank was fast-tracked into the Indian team despite missing competitive cricket in the last few months owing to a back injury he sustained midway through IPL 2024. However, Mayank did enough to impress in the seven matches he played for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2024 edition.

Following his T20I debut against Bangladesh on Sunday, LSG will need a minimum of Rs 11 crore (USD 1.31 million) to retain his services for the next season.

According to the new IPL retention rules, which were announced last month, any ‘uncapped player’, who makes his international debut (any format) before the auctions will be upgraded to the ‘capped player’ category.

The retention prices for capped players are set at Rs 18 crore (No.1), Rs 14 crore (No.2) and Rs 11 crore (no.3). For the fourth and fifth retained players, the value would again increase to Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore, respectively.

The deadline for announcing the retention list is October 31 and Mayank is set to be one of LSG’s three primary retentions.

The other likely retentions are KL Rahul, South African Quinton de Kock, West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran and Australian Marcus Stoinis. It’s highly unlikely that head coach Justin Langer and new mentor Zaheer Khan will let go of one of India’s rising pace bowling superstars.

“There is no way that LSG will put a rare bowler like Mayank back in auction pool. They have invested in him for past two seasons and he will certainly be one among the top three retentions,” an IPL insider privy to the developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
