How plant-based medicine is the new hope to tackle obesity? Expert weighs in

New Delhi: Obesity is one of the most concerning health burdens that has grappled the whole world. The rising obesity rate is alarming, particularly among youngsters. According to a new global analysis, published by The Lancet, found that 12.5 million children (7.3 million boys and 5.2 million girls) in the country, aged between five and 19, were grossly overweight in 2022, up from 0.4 million in 1990.

In the battle against the obesity epidemic, a promising beacon of hope emerges in the form of plant-based medicine. As society grapples with the escalating rates of obesity and its associated health complications, the spotlight increasingly turns towards holistic and sustainable solutions. Plant-based medicine offers a multifaceted approach that addresses not only the symptoms but also the underlying causes of obesity.

Dr Arvind Baidger – Technical Director of BDR Pharma Group told News9, “Traditionally, the treatment of obesity has often centred around calorie restriction and pharmaceutical interventions. However, these approaches frequently fall short of achieving long-term success and may come with undesirable side effects. In contrast, plant-based medicine harnesses the power of nature’s bounty to promote health and well-being.”

At the heart of plant-based medicine lies the emphasis on whole, nutrient-dense foods derived from plants. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds form the cornerstone of this dietary approach, providing an abundance of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients. By nourishing the body with these wholesome foods, individuals can experience satiety, stabilise blood sugar levels, and support optimal metabolic function.

Moreover, plant-based medicine extends beyond dietary choices to encompass herbal remedies and botanical supplements. Plants such as green tea, turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon boast potent therapeutic properties that can aid in weight management and metabolic health. Whether consumed as teas, tinctures, or capsules, these botanicals offer a natural and gentle means of supporting the body’s innate healing mechanisms.

According to Dr Baidger, “In addition to dietary and herbal interventions, plant-based medicine encompasses lifestyle modifications that promote holistic wellness. Regular physical activity, stress management techniques, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices synergistically complement dietary and herbal therapies, fostering sustainable weight loss and overall health improvement.”

Furthermore, embracing plant-based medicine aligns with principles of environmental sustainability and animal welfare. By shifting towards plant-centric diets and natural healing modalities, individuals not only enhance their health but also contribute to the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.

Plant-based medicine emerges as a new frontier in the fight against obesity, offering a holistic and sustainable approach to health and wellness. By embracing the power of plants, individuals can reclaim control over their health, transform their lives, and pave the way towards a healthier, more vibrant future for generations to come.
