How to give a CPR? Health Ministry’s 3-step way can save lives

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry recently issued advice on how to give CPR. CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency treatment for a patient whose heartbeat or breathing stops. This usually occurs in case of a heart attack or a cardiac arrest. The lifesaving technique helps maintain blood and oxygen flow in the event of a cardiac arrest. According to the American Heart Association, CPR should begin by pushing on the chest, repeatedly and with strong force. This technique involves administering chest compressions and rescue breaths to revive a patient.

In a post on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), the Union Health Ministry stated that when medical support takes time to arrive, one must go for the 3 C’s of CPR to save a life. These stand for:

  1. Check – if the patient is breathing
  2. Call – an ambulance without delay
  3. Compress – if the patient is not breathing, press the chest repeatedly 30 times and continue till medical support arrives

How to perform a CPR?

The following steps must be followed while administering a CPR to a patient:

  1. Check if the patient is breathing
  2. Call a doctor
  3. Open the patient’s airways and start with compressions
  4. Give 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths
  5. Repeat this cycle till the patient starts to breathe or till help arrives

How to give chest compressions?

Chest compressions should be given in the following way:

  1. Place the palms in the centre of the chest, one on top of the other
  2. Press firmly and steadily, 100-120 compressions in a minute
  3. Push 2 inches deep
  4. Let the chest return to the original position
  5. Start giving rescue breaths right after
  6. Pinch the patient’s nose close, lift the chin, and tilt the head back a little
  7. Blow breath into the patient’s chest and check for obstructions if the chest does not rise
  8. If the patient starts to breathe, cough, or move, stop giving CPR
