How US billionaire balances 90-hour work week and family life

New Delhi: In a world focused on achieving work-life balance, billionaire Todd Graves took a unique approach to spending time with his family by bringing them into his workspace. The co-founder and CEO of Raising Cane’s, a well-known US restaurant chain, shared his journey of building a successful business and the sacrifices that came with it. Speaking to CNBC Make It, Graves reflected: “I can’t tell you how many 15, 16-hour days I’ve worked in a row. I had to miss a lot of things.”

Graves revealed that even after reaching billionaire status, his work hours were still demanding. To stay connected, his wife would often bring their two children to his office, allowing him precious moments with his family amid his busy schedule. By carefully redistributing his workload throughout the day, he managed to carve out more time for his family.

Part of his routine included his children joining him at the office, where they would play and have dinner, thanks to his wife’s support. This helped him balance his roles as a parent and as the head of his company, even during the most demanding days.

Through the years, Graves has successfully managed his responsibilities as both CEO and father. He often wakes at 4:30 AM to tackle important work without interruptions, ensuring that he has ample time with his family later. In the company’s early years, he faced countless challenges, often clocking 90-hour weeks to build Raising Cane’s from scratch.

By structuring his day to finish work by 11 AM, Graves makes it a priority to be there for his family and friends, despite a packed schedule and frequent travel. “I’m as busy as anyone I know,” he says, “but I can work my schedule so I’m present for the important things with my kids, family, and close friends.”

Graves’s journey highlights the dedication needed to start a business, which he describes as “multiplying effort by infinity.” Since opening its first location in 1996, Raising Cane’s now boasts almost 800 outlets across the US and the Middle East. With his 90% stake in the franchise, his estimated $9.5 billion net worth speaks to the value of his hard work.

Additionally, Graves shared his hiring philosophy, noting that frequent job-hopping is a significant red flag for him when reviewing candidates’ CVs. His high standards have helped him build a brand that, nearly three decades later, is still thriving under his leadership.
