‘I want to earn Test spot again’: Suryakumar Yadav excited for India’s packed red-ball schedule

New Delhi: India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has been long missing from the red-ball scheme of things for India, having last played against Australia in whites in February 2023. He is looking to make a return to the Indian Test team, participating in the ongoing Buchi Babu Tournament, and is also looking forward to the upcoming Duleep Trophy. He said that red-ball cricket has always been his priority.

Surya’s international debut in Tests wasn’t successful as he was ruled out of the entire series due to an injury after his very first match. “Red-ball cricket has always been my priority. When I grew up in the maidans of Mumbai and played a lot of local cricket, I started playing with the red cherry. The love for the longest format began there, and has always been there,” Suryakumar told media in Coimbatore on Monday.

He went on to add that he has taken part in many first-class matches for more than 10 years and that he still enjoys playing the format. “There’s no question about it and that’s why I’m here before the Duleep Trophy,” the 33-year-old said.

The Mumbaikar was optimistic about his Test comeback and felt that playing domestic cricket would lead him to the doors of the Indian cricket team. He plays for Mumbai and said that he will always grab the opportunity when given. “I will always look for an opportunity to come and play for Mumbai, be it in First Class or a tournament like the Buchi Babu. A lot of international players have played in this competition before and have gone on to represent the country,” Surya felt.

Surya wants to “earn” Test spot

What lies ahead is a packed Test schedule for the Indian cricket team as they host Bangladesh for a two-match Test series which will be followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand. The two series will help India in the tune-up to the all-important five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy in November.

“There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again,” the flamboyant batter stressed. With 10 Test matches lined up this year, Suryakumar is nothing but excited to work his way up to the Indian cricket Test team. He added that he has to play, he will automatically as this isn’t in his control.

“What’s in my power right now is to play the Buchi Babu tournament, go on to play Duleep Trophy, and then see what happens. But yes, I’m really looking forward. There are 10 Test matches lined up and I’m obviously excited for some red-ball fun,” Surya said.

Suryakumar Yadav is eyeing for a comeback in the Test side of the Indian cricket team with the ongoing Buchi Babu and upcoming Duleep Trophy tournament.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
