7.5 lakh per game! Jay Shah announces historic match fee move ahead of IPL 2025

New Delhi: In a historic move, BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Saturday announced match fees for cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Until now cricketers used to earn from their contract money, however, from the next season each cricketer will get Rs 7.5 lakhs extra per match for featuring in the playing XI. Earlier there used to be no match fee for the IPL players as their earnings solely came from the contracts.

For example, a cricketer sold for Rs. 5 crore can end up going home with Rs 6.05 crore if he features in the playing XI for his team in all 14 league matches. Shah took to his social media handle on “X” (formerly Twitter) and announced the extra reward for the players who remain consistent throughout the whole season in terms of playing the league games.

“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount,” Shah wrote.

The BCCI secy also revealed the source of this funding saying, “Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the IPL and our players!”

It still remains unclear whether the designated amount of Rs. 12.60 crores will come from the allotted purse money of the franchises or whether the purse size is expected to swell ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Player retention rules

Even the news of the BCCI announcing the new player retention rules for the IPL 2025 mega auction is around the corner. There has been a significant delay in the announcement of these rules which has kept the management of the franchises eagerly waiting so as to proceed and finalise things for the mega auction.

The respective managements will be laying out plans for the auction over which player to retain and which player to keep an eye on, which will become much clearer once the BCCI unveils the new rule guide. The IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to take place outside India in November end or early December.

The players participating in the IPL are set to get richer as Jay Shah on Saturday announced a separate match fee for all the players which they would receive other than their contracted amount.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
