‘I’d find it hard to fathom’: Alyssa Healy on playing Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh

New Delhi: Australia captain Alyssa Healy recently shared her views on the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup saying that it wouldn’t be ideal to go ahead with it in Bangladesh. Hosting a World Cup is something of huge gravity for a nation and Bangladesh presently is still recovering from the large-scale violence and protests that left hundreds dead over the last few weeks.

Nationwide protests erupted after students in Bangladesh demanded reforms in the quota and reservation system, to the extent that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to resign and flee to India along with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who was then made the chief of the interim government. The women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled in Bangladesh from October 3 to 19, will see 10 teams participating including defending champions Australia.

“I’d find it hard to fathom playing there at the moment, as a human being, I feel like it might be the wrong thing to do,” AAP quoted Healy as saying on Cricket Australia. She further added that it would mean “taking resources away from a country that is really struggling.”

Healy however admitted that the final call lies in the hands of International Cricket Council (ICC), which is expected to finalise the decision this week. “There’s obviously bigger factors at play than putting a cricket tournament on in Bangladesh at the moment… but I’ll leave it to the ICC to work out,” she added.

BAN vs AUS recent encounters

The Aussies recently played a white-ball series in Bangladesh inclusive of three ODIs and three T20Is, all hosted at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. After the 2014 T20 World Cup, it was the first visit of the Australians to the country. The series was crucial for both nations as it was a part of the tuneup for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Australia had shown dominance by winning all six games and Healy felt that it wouldn’t go to waste if the tournament was shifted elsewhere. “Going there and getting used to those conditions and slow-turning wickets has probably put us in a good place,” Healy said.

“Whether it is in Bangladesh, or it’s not in Bangladesh, I don’t think affects us greatly with the make-up of what we’ve got. We’re well prepared for whatever is thrown at us,” she added.

Alysaa Healy gave her take on the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup going ahead in Bangladesh saying that it would be the wrong things to do amid the current scenario.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
