If financially secure, 99% of Indians will quit their jobs: Shantanu Deshpande

For those who emphasise that employees should take pride in their work, Shantanu Deshpande, the founder and CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, has a bitter realisation to share. He recently wrote on his LinkedIn post “If financial security were guaranteed, 99% wont show up to work the next day.”

Shantanu Deshpande was born in Dallas, US in 1987 in a Maharashtrian family that hailed from Indore. His statement virtually held a mirror to challenge the motivations that propel the country’s workers – from government employees to gig workers. He highlighted that the level of dissatisfaction with work was nearly universal. If there was any difference among different sectors, Deshpande described it as “The story is the same. 19-20 ka farak.”

Yawning wealth divide

In a no-holes-barred post, Deshpande wrote, “From blue-collar workforce to govt employees to gig workers to factories to insurance salesmen to banks to small business owners to even ‘fun and employee-friendly startups’ like BSC (my HR is gonna kill me :)) – the story is the same. 19-20 ka farak.”

Shantanu Deshpande also mentioned the yawning divide in fortunes in India. He even raised the question as to how the overwhelming majority in a system toil endlessly simply to sustain their families when a few benefit in a disproportionate manner. Deshpande wondered how about 2,000 families in the country has come to control 18% of India’s wealth, but they contribute less than 1.8% of the country’s taxes. “That’s just INSANE,” he wrote.

Deshpande added: “And that’s the reality. Most starting points for people are zero and work is a majboori to providing for spouse, children, elderly parents, dependent siblings.”

“Dangling carrot”

The CEO of Bombay Shaving Company wrote that he found the work culture in India to be similar to a “dangling carrot” system. “To usurp someone away from their homes and families all day from morning to night, sometimes for days and weeks, with a hanging carrot of a paycheck – we just assume it’s alright to do that cos that’s what’s been happening for 250+ years. That’s how nations have been built. So we do it.” “But increasingly I’ve found myself questioning the inequity of this,” he said.
