New Delhi: World no.2 Iga Swiatek got off to a perfect start in the Australian Open 2025 with a comfortable victory against Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in her first-round clash on Monday, January 13. Swiatek defeated Siniakova 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets to get off to a winning start in the first Grand Slam of the year and achieve a rare feat.
While Siniakova did make Swiatek work hard for the victory, the Polish star remained untroubled for the most part of the game and dominated the proceedings right from the onset. The 5-time Grand Slam champion managed to save only one out of three break points against Siniakova but wrapped up a straight sets victory in 1 hour and 23 minutes.
With the victory, Swiatek progressed to the second round at the Australian Open 2025 and went on to achieve an incredible feat. She became the only player to have reached the second round of every Grand Slam tournament since 2020, maintaining a perfect record. No other player has managed to reach the second round of each Grand Slam event since 2020.

Swiatek, who served a one-month doping suspension last year, lost her world no.1 rank to Aryna Sabalenka. Nonetheless, she started the Australian Open 2025 as one of the favourites and live up to the expectations with her dominant show in the first round. Swiatek, a 4-time French Open champion, has never won the Australian Open and would be hoping to go all the way this year.

World no.2 Swiatek will now take on Rebecca Sramkova in the second round at the Australian Open 2025. The Pole admitted it was a hard-fought victory for her in the first round and that she is happy to have progressed to the next round.
“For sure it wasn’t an easy first round. So I’m happy that I’m through. Katerina, I know her from playing doubles against her that she’s not an easy opponent,” said Swiatek.
“She was playing really well and I just needed to be more proactive. I did that in the second set, so I’m happy,” she added.
