‘Immense impact’: Sachin Tendulkar welcomes statue of his coach at ‘karmabhoomi’ Shivaji Park

New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar has lauded the Maharashtra government’s decision to build statue of his childhood coach the late Ramakant Achrekar’s at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.

During his formative years, Tendulkar honed his skills under Achrekar at Shivaji Park, and went onto become one cricket’s greatest ever batters even captaining the Indian cricket team.

The batting maestro has always regarded Achrekar as his guru and spoken highly of him, who passed away in 2019 aged 87.

Achrekar used to conduct coaching classes at Shivaji Park and produced multiple players of repute who went on to represent the country and excel i domestic cricket.

To honour his contribution to Indian cricket, the Maharashtra government has now decided to build Achrekar’s memorial.

“Achrekar Sir has had an immense impact on my life and several other lives. I am speaking on behalf of all his students. His life revolved around cricket in Shivaji Park,” Tendulkar wrote on social media platform X.

Being at Shivaji Park forever is what he would have wished for. I am very happy with the government’s decision to build a statue for Achrekar Sir at his karmabhoomi,” he added.

Achrekar’s impact on Tendulkar

Eknath Shinde’s Maharashtra government passed a resolution on Wednesday that would allow installation of a statue of Achrekar at Shivaji Park.

It would be around six feet in height and will be installed near gate number five of Shivaji Park, the proposal was approved by department of urban development with cost of maintaining the statue falling on V Kamath Memorial Cricket Club.

Achrekar was accorded the Dronacharya Award in 1990 and Padma Shri in 2010 after nurturing 14 players who donned the Indian jersey, including Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli.

He founded V Kamath Memorial Cricket Club at Shivaji Park. which is now run by his daughter Vishakha Dalvi.
