In search of lighter environment & freedom at IPL 2025, KL Rahul targets T20I return

New Delhi: KL Rahul believes in order to return to India’s T20I team, he needs a fresh start at the 2025 Indian Premier League, which is why he left Lucknow Super Giants at enlisted his name in the mega auctions.

LSG didn’t retain their captain of three years ahead of IPL 2025. Considered an all-format player not that long ago, Rahul’s stock has fallen in recent times that saw him getting dropped from the T20I and Test squads.

He wasn’t part of the T20 World Cup winning squad in June after a lukewarm IPL 2024 campaign. But rather than sulking about it, Rahul has focussed all on his energies in the hopes of a new beginning with a new franchise.

“I’ve been out of the T20 team for a while,” KL Rahul told Star Sports.

“I wanted to start fresh, I wanted to explore my options and I wanted to go and play where I could find some freedom, where the team atmosphere could be something lighter. Sometimes you need to move away and find something good for yourself.

“I know where I stand as a player, I know what I need to do to get back so I’ll look forward to this IPL season to give me that platform to go back and enjoy my cricket. My main aim is to get back into the T20 team.”

The 32-year-old will have a base price of Rs 2 crore at the mega auction, which will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25.

Rahul said he gave it his all for LSG for whom he scored 1410 runs in 38 matches spread over three seasons apart from captaining the side.

But an animated pitchside chat with LSG owner Sanjeev Goyenka following a loss disclosed differences between the captain and the team management.

Rahul is India’s Test squad for the five-Test series in Australia and received backing from head coach Gautam Gambhir, who rated him as a quality batter.
