Who is Morgan Rogers? Aston Villa midfielder who earned maiden England call-up

New Delhi: Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers has received his maiden call to the English senior team after a string of injuries affected the squad for the UEFA Nation League fixtures. The Three Lions will face Greece and the Republic of Ireland during the international break.

Initially, the midfielder had been named in the U-21 squad but has now been promoted to the senior team after Lee Carsley’s team for his final two games as England’s interim manager saw withdrawals from Bukayo Saka, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice and Aaron Ramsdale.

Already, he has played for seven clubs, having joined West Brom and making his senior debut at 16. He had started attracting attention from Manchester City. Rogers mentioned that loan spells at Lincoln City and then to Bournemouth and Blackpool had helped him become a better player.

Morgan Rogers climb at Aston Villa.

Before coming to Aston Villa, he had spent six months with Middlesbrough. His time at Riverside was mediocre, and Villans paying £8m with add-ons was a point of debate among many. For Rogers, though, Aston Villa was the next step in his career, having enjoyed the fresh experience of playing for Middlesbrough.

Rogers helped Villa finish the season in fourth place in the Premier League and has since earned 12 starts in all the games in the Premier League and Champions League. His rise has been so sudden that it has even surprised Rogers himself. Of course, the highlight of his recent success is playing against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

They were playing their first Champions League game at Villa Park in 40 years, and the game already generated a lot of hype. Rogers, too, noted that the game was full of superstars on the opposite bench, and that was, of course, an overwhelming moment. Rogers has given a lot of the club’s success to Unai Emery, who does bring a lot of energy to the pitch.

Emery is known for instilling a lot of confidence in his players, and that has worked like a charm for Rogers, too. In 11 Premier League games, he has made five goal involvements, having scored thrice. Emery giving the freedom to drive the ball has been one of the reasons for Rogers’s good numbers in the midfield.

Rogers is currently appearing in the same stages that his heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba. In the national team, his position as an attacking midfielder has some big names. Rogers knows that he needs to be at his best level if he wants to make an impact and become a regular feature in the position.
