Chennai: On a day when India extended their supremacy over Bangladesh in the Chennai Test, one man would be highly disappointed. While Virat Kohli would be happy with Team India’s strong position at the Stumps on Day 2, he rueing the missed opportunity to contribute to the team’s cause, especially after getting well-set at the crease.
India have opened up a commanding lead of 308 runs after bowling out Bangladesh for 149 and scoring 81 for 3 in the second innings.
After familiar frailties led to his early dismissal in the first innings, Kohli created a great opportunity for himself to get a big score. Unlike the first innings, the superstar batter gave himself time at the crease but despite getting well set was dismissed for 17 runs.
Kohli looked good during his 37-ball stay at the crease. He struck two boundaries and looked positive in his defence. Fans sensed a Kohli special at Chepauk following the Delhi batter’s confident start. But it was not to be. Kohli’s struggles against spin continued, though ironically, he was dismissed on a straighter delivery by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Kohli, remarkably, has been dismissed 18 times against spin in Asia since 2021 and averages just 27.72.
Trying to play across the line to a straighter delivery, Kohli was hit on the pads in front of the stumps. Kohli would find minutes later that the ball had come off the inside edge of his bat and had he taken a review, he would have survived and who knows, gone on to score a big hundred.
Kohli would aim to shrug off a poor outing in Chepauk with a big knock in the second Test in Chennai.
High among a low
Despite the failure in Chennai, it was not all doom and gloom for the Delhi batter. During his 17-run knock, Kohli completed 12000 international runs at home. Even though he doesn’t play for individual feats, a record is a record. A breakdown of the 12000 runs reveals that Kohli has scored 4167 runs in the longest format and 6268 runs in ODIs while in the T20Is, he has amassed 1577 runs. His overall tally stands at 12012 international runs at home following a 23-run aggregate in the Chennai Test.
