New Delhi: The president of Chess Federation of Russia Andrei Filatov has asked the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to start an investigation into the round 14 classical game of the World Chess Championship between D Gukesh and Ding Liren. The Russian sports body chief believes that the Chinese player deliberately lost against Gukesh and termed the blunder move to be suspicious.
Ukraine-based chess coach Peter Heine Nielsen took to his X handle to share the news, citing reports from Russian news agency TASS.
“The result of the last game caused bewilderment among professionals and chess fans. The actions of the Chinese chess player in the decisive segment are extremely suspicious and require a separate investigation by FIDE,” Filatov was quoted as saying by TASS.
“Losing the position in which Ding Liren was is difficult even for a first class player. The defeat of the Chinese chess player in today’s game raises a lot of questions and looks like a deliberate one,” the Russian chess federation chief added.

What was the blunder by Ding Liren in Round 14?
It was a nerve-wracking showdown as Gukesh sealed the 14th round of the classical World Chess Championship format against Ding Liren, the reigning champion. When draw looked the most likely outcome, Liren made a blunder by moving his rook from f4 to f2, which caused the exchanges of rooks.
As a result, the Chinese was left with just one pawn unlike Gukesh’s two pawns. Three moves later, Ding resigned from the game and followed with the customary handshake with Gukesh. Ding admitted in the post-match press conference about his blunder, but didn’t regret for it.
“I was totally in shock when I realised I had made a blunder. His facial expression told me that he was very happy and very excited. That’s when I realised I had made a blunder. It took me some time to realise it,” the Chinese GM said.
“It was not as dead a draw as yesterday. He had a bishop on the board. He also had a rook, so it was more tricky. I could have done better, but considering my lucky escape in yesterday’s game, it’s fair that I lost in the end. I have no regrets,” he added.
