New Delhi: India won the fourth T20 International match against England by 15 runs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday. This win helped India confirm the five-match series with an unassailable lead of 3-1 before the final T20I match.

England invited the hosts to bat first after winning the toss. Sanju Samson once again failed to provide a decent start at the top followed by Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma departing without troubling the scoreboard for nought. Abhishek Sharma couldn’t convert his decent start into a big knock, walking back to the pavilion for 19-ball 29 after belting four boundaries and a six.

The middle order and lower middle order rescued the sinking ship with Rinku Singh contributing some crucial runs (30 off 26 balls) before the two all-rounders changed the course of the innings with brisk fifties. Hardik Pandya (53 off 30 balls) and Shivam Dube (53 off 34 balls) stitched an imperative 87-run stand to propel India to 181 for 9 in the first innings.

Harshit Rana comes in as replacement for Shivam Dube, bowls a match-turning spell

Harshit Rana came in as a concussion substitute for all-rounder Shivam Dube when India entered the field to defend 181 on the board. Dube was struck on the helmet in the first innings, and thus, couldn’t turn up for fielding. Although the decision to field Rana as a replacement divided opinions among the cricket fraternity, Rana bowled a magnificent spell of 3 for 33 as India bowled out England for 166 in 19.4 overs.

The two leg-spinners Ravi Bishnoi (3 for 28) and Varun Chakravarthy (2 for 28) continued to rattle the Englishmen. Harry Brook, who has struggled to counter the spinners in this series, smashed a 26-ball 51 before holing out to Arshdeep Singh off Chakravarthy’s bowling. Ben Duckett was the only other batter to add a significant score (39 off 19 balls) in the chase, which England failed at and lost the series.
