New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma record-breaking 54-ball 135-run knock infused life into a dead rubber as India won the fifth and final T20I by 150 runs to complete a 4-1 domination over England in the series.
Sharma bludgeoned his way to the highest score for an Indian batter in T20Is while also notching up the second quickest hundred and fifty as India posted a massive 247/9 at the Wankhede Stadium as England disintegrated in the run chase, getting shot out for 97 in 10.3 overs.
England won the toss and opted to field and were left to rue the decision from the first ball itself when Sanju Samson (16, 7 ball) dispatched Jofra Archer for a six over midwicket.
Even though Samson persihed attemting a similar shot soon, Sharma never backed down. Be it the pace of Archer, Mark Wood or the spin of Adil Rashid, he was merciless towards every England bowlers, blasting seven boundaries and 13 sixes, the most by an India in a T20I innings.
With his 37-ball century, the 24-year-old Sharma placed himself behind Rohit Sharma’s 35-ball knock against India in the fastest T20I ton for Indians, after registering the second quickest half century off 17 balls for the country, only behind his mentor Yuvraj Singhs’s 12-ball knock against England.
Sharma however reset the record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in a T20I innings, sending the ball 12 times over the fence as the crowd went berserk in the stands.
