Social media fumes after Imane Khelif beats Angela Carini in controversial boxing bout at Olympics

New Delhi: Social media users were furious after Imane Khelif of Algeria won her first bout at the Paris Olympics 2024 in just 46 seconds, beating Italian Boxer Angela Carini. The controversial bout which took place at the Paris Games on Thursday faced a lot of criticism as Algerian boxer Khelif was excluded from the World Championships for failing a gender eligibility test in 2023, leading to the eruption of gender row.

Her participation in the women’s boxing bout at the Olympic Games has sparked a massive controversy as users demanded to ban men from competing at a women’s event at the Olympics. The controversial bout was halted in the 46th second after Carini suffered a suspected broken nose. She abandoned the match after just two receiving two punches to her face which is very unusual in Olympic boxing.

After the call-off, the Italian boxer threw her helmet and yelled that ‘this is unjust’. As soon as the bout got over with the controversial result in favour of the Algerian boxer, social media users fumed saying that this was a shame on Olympics. The one-sided bout sparked an immediate reaction from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who said the fight was “not on an equal footing”.

The bout had already sparked intense controversy with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) facing an increasing pressure to tell how a female boxer could enter the right with doubts over her opponents gender.
