New Delhi: The intra-squad match between India and India A was called off by the team management midway through on Day 3. The match was supposed to be played until June 16, but the management decided to call the match off just after two and a half days.
The Men in Blue will now leave for Headingley on Tuesday, June 17. The first Test match of the series will start on June 20 in Headingley, Leeds. The Test series against England also marks the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
Shardul Thakur shines in intra-squad match
Shardul Thakur is back in the Indian Test set-up and has made a case for selection in India’s playing XI for the opening Test against England. He notched up an unbeaten century in the intra-squad match. According to a report from the Indian Express, Shardul scored an unbeaten 122 runs.
He last played a Test match for India in 2023 against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town and made a comeback in the Test team after stunning performances for Mumbai in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, where he finished as the second leading run getter of the team. He also picked up 35 wickets in the nine matches.
Shardul failed to contribute with the ball in the two unofficial Tests against the England Lions earlier this month, but has also impressed with his bowling on Day 1 of the intra-squad match.
Gill, Rahul impress
For India, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill have played good innings with the bat. Both batters scored their half-centuries and helped India post 469 runs on the scoreboard.
For India A, Sarfaraz played a sensational knock and scored 101 runs off 76 balls, but he’s not part of the main squad for the series against England. On Day 2 of the match, star bowler Jasprit Bumrah failed to take wickets while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets each. Nitish Kumar Reddy also took one wicket.
