New Delhi: India women cricket team beat Ireland women cricket team by six wickets in the first One-Day International match played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Friday. Ireland won the toss and opted to bat first.

Irish skipper Gaby Lewis set the stage with a classic 92-run knock laced with 15 boundaries but missed out on her maiden ODI century. She was caught and bowled by Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma. Lewis played an impetus knock to lift the visitor’s innings after the Indian bowlers struck regular wickets with Sarah Forbes (9), Una Raymond-Hoey (5), Orla Prendergast (9), and Laura Delany (0) departed for low runs.

Leah Paul gave an able hand to her captain after their back was found against the wall. Paul hung there in there in the middle and plundered some crucial runs. The all-rounder hit seven boundaries to add 59 runs from 73 balls before she was run out by the combined efforts of Harleen Deol and Richa Ghosh. Paul and Lewis added 117 runs for the fifth wicket as Ireland posted a sizeable score of 238 for 7 in the regulation period of 50 overs.

Young guns Pratika, Tejal contribute in moderate chase

Indian openers Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal put on a strong partnership with the senior player getting off to a brisk start. The southpaw smashed six boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 141.38. She was dismissed for a 29-ball 41 after getting caught by Prendergast off Freya Sargent’s bowling in the 10th over.

Youngster Pratika Rawal produced another classical knock after scoring her maiden ODI half-century last month against the West Indies in Vadodara. She made 89 runs off 96 balls, having hammered 10 fours and one six, but missed out on a three-figure score this time as well. Middle order-batter Tejal Hasabnis notched up her maiden half-century (53*) as India completed the chase in 34.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead.

India’s women’s cricket team defeated Ireland by six wickets in the first One Day International (ODI) match in Rajkot. Ireland, winning the toss and batting first, posted 238/7, thanks largely to Gaby Lewis’s 92. India’s chase was anchored by Pratika Rawal’s 89 and Tejal Hasabnis’s unbeaten 53, securing a 1-0 series lead.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
