New Delhi: The history of India’s independence movement is filled with tales of bravery, selflessness and unwavering resolve. The fight for freedom in India saw the leadership of iconic figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru and Bhagat Singh.

However, it’s important to recognise that alongside these prominent leaders, countless unsung heroes also dedicated their lives to the cause of Independence. These lesser-known freedom fighters made significant contributions and sacrifices, often at great personal cost, but their stories and struggles often remain in the shadows despite their equal dedication and commitment to the movement.

Below are 7 unsung freedom fighters who played pivotal roles in India’s quest for Independence despite not receiving widespread recognition.

Aruna Asaf Ali

During the Quit India Movement in 1942, Aruna Asaf Ali, at 33, raised the Indian National Congress flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay. Following issuing an arrest warrant in her name, she went into hiding and initiated a movement. Her property was confiscated and sold by the British, who also offered a reward of Rs 5,000 for her capture.

Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay

Kamaladevi was a pioneering social reformer and freedom activist. She made history as the first woman in India to run for a legislative seat and was also the first woman to be arrested by the British.

Alluri Sitarama Raju

Alluri Sitarama Raju, a notable figure from present-day Andhra Pradesh, was prominent in leading the Rampa Rebellion of 1922–24. This rebellion saw him fervently opposing the British in the border regions of East Godavari and Visakhapatnam.

Tiruppur Kumaran

Kumaran from Tiruppur was actively involved in the Indian freedom struggle and tragically sustained fatal injuries in a confrontation with the police in January 1932. When he lost his life, Kumaran was bravely holding the Indian nationalist flag, which the British authorities had prohibited. His courageous act made him remembered as ‘Kodi Kaatha Kumaran’ in Tamil, which translates to “Kumaran who protected the flag.”

Bhikaji Cama

Madam Bhikaji Cama played a significant role in India’s Independence movement and advocated for gender equality. She was also known for her philanthropy, generously donating most of her assets to an orphanage for girls.

Garimella Satyanarayana

Garimella Satyanarayana inspired the people of Andhra Pradesh through his literary works. His poems and songs rallied the community to unite and resist British colonial rule.

Peer Ali Khan

Peer Ali Khan, a lesser-known figure than Mangal Pandey, was a brave hero of the 1857 mutiny. Along with 13 others, Khan was executed for his active role in rebelling against British rule. Despite being less renowned, his courageous act of resistance deserves to be remembered and honoured.
