New Delhi: It is a fact universally known that Rajasthan is a hotspot for historical forts and monuments. Among the notables ones is the Samode Palace which is known for its stunning architecture. Samode Palace, Samode Haveli and Samode Bagh (Garden) are heritage structures in Rajasthan which was renowned for their architecture including detailed interior work. The three places have a rich history of several hundred years.

Samode: The Palace, the haveli, the garden and Rajasthan’s pride

Samode, a town in Rajasthan, was once ruled by the zamindars of the Amber state. The place became famous after the zamindars, known locally as ‘thakurs’, traced their lineage to Maharaja Rajveer Singhji. The town was given to one of his sons, Gopal Singhji, a noble feudatory. It was a rich town and a Rajput warrior named Behari Das, was then serving the Mughals got the zamindari of Samode.

The history of the Samode Palace

The main attraction, the Samode Palace, was built in the 16th century by a noble feudatory as a Rajput fort. In the early 19th century, nobleman Rawal Berisal expanded it and converted it into a luxurious palace in Rajput and Islamic architectural style. His descendent, Rawal Sheo Singh, a nobleman expanded the palace further by constructing the Durbar Hall and the Sheesh Mahal. In 1987, it was converted into “Samode Palace Hotel”.

The Samode Palace’s architecture

The palace is an architectural marvel and has been visited by several celebrities, artists, and tourists from around the world. It was built by combining exquisite marbles and masonry. A prominent tourist place in Jaipur, the palace stands strong as a heritage monument with its Indo-Saracenic architecture.

The palace was made of sandstone and it shows the rich architectural style of Rajasthan during the reign of the Rajputs. The interiors of the palace are decorated by ornamented pillars, frescoes, floral motif paintings and marble floors. The frescoes in the Durbar Hall and the Sultan Hall are around 250 years old.

Samode Haveli and Samode Bagh

The Samode Haveli has an elegantly painted dining room and its unique ambience is a juxtaposition of history with modern setting. It was constructed around 175 years ago with a garden and apartments. The Samode Bagh was built in the 16th century in the Mughal style. It covers 20 acres and is enclosed by a 15 feet high wall. Built by Rawal Sheo Singh, it is Rajasthan’s oldest functional Mughal garden and has a 150-year-old pavilion in the garden premise.
