New Delhi: India closed in on their place in the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal with a thumping 50-run win against Bangladesh in the Super Eight clash in Antigua. This was their second successive win in the super eight stage, after beating Afghanistan in the first match convincingly. The Men in Blue, who remain unbeaten in the event so far, rode on Hardik Pandya’s blazing half-century and quality bowling from Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah.
Chasing a massive 197-run target, the Bangladesh side tried their best to cross the finish line but unfortunately could only muster 146 for 8 in the stipulated 20 overs. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led the chase from the front with his classy 40-run knock but unfortunately fell victim to pace spreadhead Bumrah. Apart from the skipper, Tanzid Hasan and in the end Rishad Hossain, showed some courage in the innings with scores of 29 and 24 respectively while the other batters failed miserably.
Indian bowlers dominate
Indian bowlers exhibited a dominant show as they thwarted every effort made by the Bangla Tigers to chase the score. Chinaman Kuldeep proved to be the best out of the lot with his three wickets and giving away just 19 runs while Bunrah stood up again for the team with figures of 2/13. Arshdeep Singh also picked up two wickets while Hardik also scalped one as India dominated the show against Bangladesh.
Hardik the hero for Men in Blue
Earlier, Hardik silenced his critics with a remarkable half century to take his team to a massive total in the super eight clash. The all-rounder struck 50 off just 27 balls to power India to an impressive score of 196 for 5 which happened to be the highest T20I score on this ground.
Pandya hit four boundaries and three sixes and shared a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket with Shivam Dube (34 off 24 balls). Apart from him and Dube, Rishabh Pant (36 off 24 balls) and Virat Kohli (37 off 28 balls) were the other significant contributors as the latter also rose to form with a valauble knock for the team. Seamer Tanzim Hasan Sakib (2/32) was the pick of Bangladeshi bowlers with two wickets while Rishad Hossain also picked two wickets.
India next face Australia in their third and last super eight clash on Monday.
