India coach Gautam Gambhir to fly back from Australia amid Border-Gavaskar Trophy

New Delhi: Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is reportedly said to fly back to India from Australia in the middle of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He is expected to join the squad just before the start of the second Test match in Adelaide.

A day after India’s emphatic 295-run win in the series opener in Perth, Gambhir has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be travelling to India because of personal reasons, as reported by The Indian Express. However, the 43-year-old has promised to be available for the second Test match, scheduled to start on December 6.

“Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons and the BCCI has accepted his request,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express.

It should be noted that there is a 10-day gap between the first and second Test, which is a good window for Gambhir to travel back and forth. In his absence, the training session will be monitored by his support staff comprising assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, bowling coach Morne Morkel, and fielding coach T Dilip.

Rohit Sharma returns for second Test

The Indian camp will boasted by the return of skipper Rohit Sharma, who arrived in Perth on Sunday after missing the first Test. He decided to stay back in India for the birth of his second child.

Indian bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, in Rohit’s absence, donned the captain’s armband in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy curtain-raiser, leading the team to an inspiring win after being found in tatters on Day 1 with the first innings skittled out for a measly 150.

Bumrah was adjudged as player of the match for returning with match figures of 8 for 72, involving his Test career’s 11th five-wicket haul (5 for 30) as the Australians were bundled up for 104 and 238 in their respective innings.
