New Delhi: Led by solar and wind energy, India crossed 200 GW-mark in renewable energy (RE) production in the month of September, as per the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The latest data by the CEA shows that renewable energy-based electricity generation capacity (including small and and large hydro, biomass and co-generation and waste-to-energy) crossed the 200 GW-mark in the previous month.
The total renewable energy production in September was 201,457.91 MW, with solar energy production at 90,762 MW and wind energy production at 47,363 MW. The data showed that the country’s total non-fossil fuel-based power capacity presently stands at 46.3 per cent of the total installed electricity generation capacity.
As per the Central Electricity Authority, Rajasthan (31.5 GW), Gujarat (28.3 GW), Tamil Nadu (23.7 GW) and Karnataka (22.3 GW) are the top four renewable energy producing states. India has recorded 86 per cent increase in power generation via renewable energy since 2014, from 193.5 billion units (BU) to 360 BU.
It may be noted that India is the only G20 country to have met its climate targets ahead of schedule. Importantly, the country has the lowest per capita emissions among G20 nations.
In yet another step towards increasing the renewable energy production, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy notified scheme guidelines for implementation of ‘Innovative Projects’ under PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
“The Government of India approved the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana on 29th February 2024, with the aim to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity. The scheme has an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore and is to be implemented till FY 2026-27,” Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shripad Y Naik, addressed the gathering at the Brainstorming Conclave on ‘Indian Power Sector Scenario by 2047’, on October 14 and highlighted India’s progress in clean energy.
He emphasised the need for continued investments in renewable technologies, grid modernisation, and robust planning to meet India’s 2047 goals.
“Significant investments will be needed in renewable technologies, energy storage solutions, and grid modernization. A robust transmission system will also be necessary to evacuate and integrate these new generation capacities with the grid,” Naik said.
India surpassed the 200 GW-mark in renewable energy production with Solar (90,762 MW) and wind (47,363 MW) accounting for the bulk of it. Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
