Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned to the country due to a family emergency, a BCCI source informed PTI.

The source revealed that Gambhir had to return home to check on his mother, who has been admitted to a hospital in New Delhi owing to health complications. Gambhir was accompanying the Shubman Gill-led Indian Test squad in the UK for a five-match series against England starting June 20 in Leeds.

“Yes. He’s gone back (to India) for a family emergency,” said the source.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will take charge of the squad in Gambhir’s absence during the four-day intra-squad match between India and India A, beginning in Beckenham on Friday.

Ten Doeschate will be assisted by other coaching staff, such as bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.

While there is no set timeline for Gambhir’s return, the former India opener is expected to land in England in a week’s time, but everything depends on the situation back home.

India will face England in a five-match series starting in Leeds and, in the process, will open their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign.

Meanwhile, Indian players and staff members observed a minute’s silence to pay tribute to the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash.

The players and members of the support staff are also wearing black armbands in remembrance of the victims.
