New Delhi: Brett Lee has given his nod of approval to the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the Indian cricket team’s next head coach.
Gambhir was appointed as the man to tutor the team after Rahul Dravid decided not to continue after winning the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean last month.
Former opener Gambhir guided Kolkata Knight Riders to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2024, having captained them to their fiest two victories in 2012 and 2014.
Lee praised Gambhir’s aggressive approach and ability to unite the team and pull everyone towards the goal of winning trophies.
“He’s (Gautam Gambhir) done a terrific job every time he’s had an opportunity. The Indian Premier League title with KKR is the best example. He’s always been there, always at the top of his game. He finds a way to unite his players and graft his team together.
“He builds a solid structure. He has been a terrific player, and his aggression and winning attitude will help India. He has shone internationally as a player. India is in safe hands with Gautam Gambhir as coach. Congratulations to Rahul for finishing on a high,” Lee told The Times of India.
As player, Gambhir was part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup winning team and 2011 ODI World Cup claiming teams. Since his retirment he has served as commentator and TV pundit and mentored IPL side Lucknow Super Giant for two years before moving on to KKR before its 2024 edition.
But it is the firt time he would serve as head coach of any national team. His first assignment would be the white-ball series away in Sri Lanka beginning on July 27.
