New Delhi: India overcame pandemic effects to become the world’s fastest-growing economy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while speaking on Budget 2024 in the Lok Sabha. Sitharaman said the agriculture sector received an allocation of Rs 1.52 lakh crore in 2023-24, compared to Rs 30 lakh crore in 2013-14. The Modi government’s Budget expenditure grew by Rs 48.21 lakh crore and is projected to grow 7.3 per cent in FY24 and 8.5 per cent over pre-actuals in FY24, she added.

The allocation also rose Rs 8,000 crore year-on-year in this Budget she added. Delving deeper into the Budget, she said the allocation for education and employment rose to Rs 1.48 lakh crore in Budget 2024, up 23 per cent from Rs 85 lakh crore in 2013-14.

On controversy over Budget allocation to states
She said the unemployment rate for the 15-59 year age group in J&K came down to 4.4 per cent in FY23 from 5.7 per cent in FY22 and 6.4 per cent in FY21. Sitharaman said that the Budget provided a substantial assistance of Rs 12,000 crore to Jammu and Kashmir.
She also took on Opposition barbs regarding little or no allocation to states other than coalition partners ruled Bihar and Andhra Pradesh saying that if a state had not been mentioned in the Budget speech, it did not mean they had not been allocated funds.
