New Delhi: Team India will be looking to continue the winning run in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the first Test comprehensively by 295 runs and registering their biggest-ever victory in Australia. The win was a result of exceptional batting from the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli, and of course the magical spells of stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, a game-changer player indeed, who led the team to success and boosted its morale.
India landed in Australia on the back of a heartbreaking 0-3 Test series whitewash at the hands of New Zealand. The Kiwi players managed to do the unthinkable as they beat India on their own turf and sealed a historic series win. Test captain Rohit Sharma faced heavy criticism post-series as fans and cricket pundits highlighted his lack of game sense and poor decision making which cost the series dearly to India.
Rohit made himself unavailable for the first Test owing to the birth of his second child. He welcomed a baby boy on November 15 and therefore delayed his travel to Australia. He joined the team back on the third day of the Perth Test and will take the command of the team from Bumrah to lead the Men in Blue in the remaining four games, also retaining his opener’s role which means an inevitable change in the current batting order.
While Shubman Gill’s selection for the second Test is still under doubt as he hasn’t yet recovered from the thumb injury, Rohit’s inclusion in the batting order means KL Rahul will have to shift at no. 3. Rahul opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal and fared good enough. If Gill makes it in time for the Test, he might give Rahul a competition for the no. 3 role. All of this means there won’t be a space in the team for Devdutt Padikkal who was a last-minute addition to the team ahead of the first Test.
Also not playing the first Test was spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who almost had nothing to do at the juicy and pace-helping track of Perth. However, according to several media reports, Ashwin can be roped back in for the pink ball Test in Adelaide while Jadeja’s selection still stands unclear at the moment.
