New Delhi: The Men in Blue beat South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 World Cup final and ended India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought. Indian team remained undefeated in the tournament and became the third side after England and West Indies to lift the T20 World Cup title two times.
The T20 World Cup final match witnessed a peak viewership of 5.3 crore on Disney+Hotstar, the number is still less than last year’s ODI World Cup final match between India and Australia. The peak viewership in the ODI World Cup final was 5.9 crore, despite India ending the tournament on the losing side. The Men in Blue played outstanding cricket in the 2023 ODI World Cup, winning 10 consecutive matches leading into the final. According to industry experts, this 5.9 crore still holds the record for peak concurrency for live streaming of any cricket match.
Disney Star holds the exclusive rights to broadcast ICC matches in India on both TV and digital platforms. The T20 World Cup final was also telecasted live on Star Sports Network by Disney Star and the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) will release TV viewership numbers after a week.
India ended long-standing ICC trophy drought
Team India ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought after defeating South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Rohit Sharma and Co. scored 176 runs in the 20 overs after opting to bat first. Keshav Maharaj got the wicket of in-form Rohit Sharma in the second over. Virat Kohli scored 76 runs off 59 balls, his brilliant knock was laced with six boundaries and two maximums. All-rounder Axar Patel also scored 47 runs off 31 balls with one boundary and four maximums. Shivam Dube also made a crucial contribution with the bat.
Chasing the target, South Africa got off to a poor start as Bumrah dismissed Reeza Hendricks in the second over. Tristan Stubbs stitched a 58-run partnership with de Kock and Klassen also stitched a 45-run partnership with David Miller. Heinrich Klaasen smashed 24 runs in the 15th over and took South Africa close to lifting their first-ever T20 World Cup title but Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh pulled things back in India’s favour with some brilliant bowling and took India over the line.
