New Delhi: Team India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has been nominated for the ‘Comeback of the Year’ award at the Laureus World Sports awards 2025. Pant made a strong comeback for Team India in 2024 after spending a year on the sidelines following a dangerous car crash in December 2022. Pant sustained serious injuries in the near-fatal accident but recovered miraculously in just over a year to return to competitive cricket.
Pant returned to competitive cricket after his long injury layoff for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 last year. He enjoyed a good season with the bat, notching up 446 runs for the franchise in 13 matches while leading them. However, Pant failed to take his team into the playoffs. He was later picked in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 on the basis of his performance in the IPL.
Pant played his part in helping India win the T20 World Cup 2024 title with 171 runs in 8 matches at a strike rate of 127.61 and there has been no looking back for the swashbuckling left-hander. Pant has been nominated for the Comeback of the Year award along with Spanish motorcycle racer Marc Marquez, American swimmer Caeleb Dressel, Brazil’s gymnast Rebeca Andrade, Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmushave and Swiss ski racer Lara Gut-Behrami.
The winner of the award will be announced in the Laureus World Sports awards ceremony on April 1, 2025. If Pant manages to win the award, he will become only the second Indian cricketer after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to win a Laureus Sports Award. Tendulkar won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award (2000-2020) for India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph.
Pant played 10 T20Is for India last year, amassing 222 runs at an average of 22.75 with the highest score of 49. He also did well in Tests with 677 runs from 10 matches at an average of 37.61, including a century against Bangladesh in Chennai. Pant was India’s highest run-getter in the three-match Test series against New Zealand at home with 261 runs. However, India suffered a humiliating 3-0 whitewash in the series.
Rishabh Pant to lead LSG in IPL 2025
Pant is currently with the rest of the Indian squad in Dubai for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, he is yet to get a game in the tournament and is unlikely to make the cut in the XI with India taking Australia in the 1st semi-final on Tuesday, March 04. Pant will be in action for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the upcoming IPL 2025 next.
Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history after Lucknow Super Giants bought him for a record sum of Rs 27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Pant has been named the captain of the franchise for the new season and will be hoping to lead them to their maiden title this year.
