New Delhi: The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has banned two Indian long-distance runners Hemraj Gurjar and Anjali Kumari for doping. Both athletes failed their dope tests last year. Anjali has been handed a six-year ban by NADA’s Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, while Gurjar has been banned for four years.
Anjali, who secured a silver in cross-country running at the National Championships last year, also represented India in the World Cross Country Championships last year. She was put under provisional suspension by NADA after testing positive for a banned substance last year. Anjali’s six-year ban began on March 31 this year, as per an update on NADA’s website.
25-year-old Gurjar also took part in the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships last year along with Anjali. He won a bronze medal in the 2023 National Inter-State Championships and the gold medal in the National Cross Country Championships in 2023 and 2024. Gurjar was handed a provisional suspension by NADA after testing for a prohibited substance – Darbepoetin (DEPO) last year.
Gurjar’s four-year ban will come into effect from April 20, the date of the decision. Gurjar’s last appearance was in the World Athletics Cross Country Championships last year, where he finished 87th in the F1 category.
Wrestlers Divya Kakran, Omkar Shankar banned
The WADA has also banned wrestlers Omkar Shankar Chougale and Divya Kakran.
