Indian players heckled? Rohit Sharma reveals why BCCI banned open nets in Australia

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to ban open practice sessions for the Indian team in their ongoing tour of Australia after chaos unfolded during their open nets in Adelaide. Thousands of fans turned up to watch the Indian players train in Adelaide ahead of their second Test against Australia which concluded on Sunday with India suffering a crushing 10-wicket defeat.

Multiple reports claimed that some of the Indian players were ‘heckled’ by the crowd and faced rude comments from the fans, who constantly jeered them regarding their failed shots. The BCCI decided to swing into action and requested Cricket Australia (CA) to ban open net sessions for the Indian team for the remainder of the tour to avoid such scenarios.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was recently asked about the same during the post-match press conference after India’s defeat against Australia in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. While Rohit didn’t confirm if the Indian players were ‘heckled’ and mocked by the fans, he insisted practice sessions should be very private as the team does a lot of planning for the game.

Rohit said there are multiple conversations between players and the coaches in the training sessions and such conversations should not be leaked or heard by anyone else. The Indian skipper said the fans should come to the stadium to watch the Test matches instead of turning up at the team’s practice sessions in Australia.

“You know, the net sessions are very private, and this was the first time ever I saw so many people during the nets. When you’re training, when you’re practising, there are a lot of conversations that happen, and those conversations are very private. We don’t want anyone to hear those conversations. It is as simple as that because there’s a lot of planning,” said Rohit.

“There’s a lot of talking that happens. And the crowds are very close to that practice facility. There are five days of Test cricket. They can come and watch us there,” he added.

India aim to bounce back in Brisbane

India will be looking to bounce back to winnings ways and go 2-1 up in the five-match series when they lock horns with Australia in the 3rd Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. India pulled off a famous victory at the Gabba on their last tour of Australia to clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. They will be hoping to make it two wins in a row at the iconic venue this time around.
